The most useful thing I've done in mentoring sessions isn't giving advice.
It's asking one question that makes someone stop mid-sentence.
In the early stages of a product, nothing is stable. The idea is still stretching. The priorities keep shifting. The team is trying to find both momentum and meaning in the same breath.
That’s where mentoring matters most.
Not to provide answers. But to help shape the questions.
Recently, I spent time mentoring early-stage founders through a startup program. These are not pitch-polished teams looking for high-fidelity feedback. These are builders deep in the product trenches, figuring out privacy, brand, user experience, and emotional impact all at once.
One conversation stood out:
A founder working on wearable AI tech shared a challenge: How do we balance usability and privacy in real-world, high-stress environments? We explored using small, concrete mechanisms to give users more control.
The shift wasn’t tactical. It was emotional.
They weren’t looking for the perfect feature. They were looking for a way to feel like the product aligned with their values.
That’s when I saw the mentoring role clearly again:
To create a reflective pause inside urgency
To protect user integrity in spaces that move fast
To name what matters when everything feels noisy
They need resonance.
In most of these mentoring sessions, the real impact came not from new ideas, but from naming what the founder already sensed:
“We know brand matters, but we haven’t figured out what that even means yet.”
“We’re clear on features, but not clear on what this experience is supposed to feel like.”
“We know we’re getting closer. But we still don’t know how to talk about it.”
These aren’t red flags. They’re signals of depth.
The work of mentoring is not to fix that. It’s to stand beside it. And offer shape.
When you sit with a team that hasn’t had time to zoom out, your presence becomes pattern recognition. Not because you’re smarter or more experienced. But because you’re not submerged in the day-to-day fog.
This is the part of UX leadership that isn’t glamorous:
Asking the slow questions
Honouring the feeling of not-knowing
Holding space for the idea to find its shape before it finds its pitch
It’s not mentorship for the spotlight. It’s guidance for the middle.
So many teams are building in uncertainty. Not because they lack capability, but because they’re operating inside systems that move fast and reward surface clarity.
Mentoring inside those systems means:
Making room for deeper clarity
Protecting values through decisions
Helping teams reconnect to what they already know
That’s what this work is about.
